Sanmar Group Expands Engineering Business at OneHub Chennai

The Sanmar Group, a USD 1.5-billion conglomerate with diversified interests spanning chemicals, shipping, engineering and metals, is all set to ramp up its engineering foray at the OneHub Chennai, an integrated industrial park situated on 1,250 acres. The joint venture is between CapitaLand Development, Mizuho Bank and JGC Corporation and it is located along Chennai’s Old Mahabalipuram Road.

Two of the Group’s flagship subsidiaries BS & B Safety Systems and Flowserve Sanmar—have agreed to acquire land inside the park. While CapitaLand spokesperson said BS & B Safety Systems and Flowserve Sanmar have bought 4.5 acres and 7.5 acres respectively, to support their expansion plans.

BS & B Safety Systems was formed in 1981 as a joint venture between BS & B Safety Systems, US and the corporation that would become Trelleborg, focusing on producing rupture disks, rupture disk assemblies and burst alert sensors. This will improve its production capacity and help it cater to the increasing demand for industrial safety solutions.

Alternatively, Flowserve Corporation, US, also runs as Flowserve Sanmar JV to produce pusher seals, dry running seals, split seals, metal bellows seals, non-contacting seals, etc. The use of the further land is so the company can increase production, and strengthen its presence in the market.

The two subsidiaries are presently based in Karapakkam, Chennai. The shift to OneHub Chennai is expected to offer them improved infrastructure and connectivity for uninterrupted business movements.

This is part of Sanmar Group’s larger strategy of boosting its engineering capabilities and harnessing the benefits of an integrated industrial ecosystem. The investment is also hailed as an endorsement for the industrial growth corridor along Old Mahabalipuram Road which has been receiving major investments in the recent past.

The expansion at OneHub Chennai reinforces the increasing demand for advanced engineering solutions coupled with the confidence expressed in Chennai’s industrial capabilities by leading giants.
