Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder Dr. S. Ramadoss has strongly criticised the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to reopen eight new sand quarries across various districts from November 1. He warned that the move would lead to severe environmental degradation, depletion of groundwater, and destruction of river ecosystems.
According to reports, the Water Resources Department has proposed to start operations at two locations in Cuddalore, three in Pudukkottai, and one each in Thanjavur, Ranipet, and Namakkal districts. The Environment Department has reportedly granted clearance for these sites.
Dr. Ramadoss pointed out that in 2023, 25 sand quarries were allowed to function under mineral department regulations. However, investigations revealed that sand was mined up to four times beyond the permitted limits in many of these sites. Enforcement authorities also confirmed large-scale illegal extraction in at least 12 quarries.
“The excessive sand mining carried out in violation of norms has already affected groundwater levels. Reopening more quarries will worsen the situation,” Ramadoss said. He cautioned that sand plays a crucial role in maintaining riverbeds, preventing erosion, and replenishing groundwater. Removing it extensively could cause flash floods during monsoon and severe drought during summer, he noted.
He further explained that river sand, formed over thousands of years through natural processes, is vital for sustaining soil fertility and supporting plant growth. “Extracting it beyond sustainable levels will disturb the ecosystem and cause irreversible damage,” he warned.
The PMK leader urged the state government to prioritise environmental conservation over commercial interests. He suggested exploring sustainable alternatives, such as using chemical or manufactured sand in construction, to reduce dependency on river sand.
Dr. Ramadoss concluded by demanding that the Tamil Nadu government immediately withdraw its approval for the new sand quarries to protect the state’s natural resources and ensure long-term water security.
