Puducherry Accelerates Urban Transformation with Smart City Infrastructure Projects

Puducherry has strengthened its urban development roadmap with the inauguration of multiple infrastructure projects under the Smart City Mission, aimed at improving housing, power reliability, and sports amenities across the Union Territory. The projects were inaugurated by Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, marking a significant milestone in Puducherry’s efforts to modernise civic infrastructure while ensuring inclusivity.

One of the flagship initiatives is the redevelopment of Anna Thidal, a historic playground, into a modern mini stadium. The upgraded facility now features new spectator galleries, a performance stage, organised parking for nearly 1,500 two-wheelers, and improved public amenities. Built at an approximate cost of ₹12 crore, the stadium is expected to serve as a major sports and recreation hub, particularly benefiting students from nearby schools and colleges. Officials said the project balances heritage value with contemporary urban needs.

In the power sector, Puducherry has undertaken extensive upgrades to improve reliability and reduce disruptions, especially in coastal areas prone to weather-related outages. As part of this initiative, 26 ageing substations have been replaced with compact, maintenance-free substations. In addition, around 19 km of overhead power lines along the coastline have been converted into underground cabling. The power infrastructure upgrade involved an investment of roughly ₹28 crore and is expected to significantly enhance safety and service continuity.

Housing development formed another key pillar of the Smart City rollout. Around 220 new dwelling units have been constructed for economically weaker section families, replacing old and dilapidated housing blocks. These new homes are equipped with essential amenities such as drinking water connections, drainage systems, electricity supply, and improved sanitation facilities. Authorities confirmed that the units are ready for allotment, offering safer and more dignified living conditions to beneficiaries.

Together, these projects underline Puducherry’s commitment to planned urban growth that combines infrastructure modernisation with social equity. By focusing simultaneously on sports, housing, and essential services, the Union Territory is positioning itself for sustainable, people-centric development in the coming years.
