Bengaluru’s Old Madras Road, one of the city’s busiest arterial stretches, is witnessing mounting traffic congestion as uncertainty continues over a proposed flyover project meant to ease vehicle movement. Daily commuters say travel time has increased significantly during peak hours, with bottlenecks becoming a routine experience.

The corridor connects key residential neighbourhoods, commercial hubs and industrial pockets in east Bengaluru. With steady urban expansion and rising vehicle density, the road has struggled to cope with growing traffic volumes. The long discussed flyover project was expected to streamline movement and reduce pressure on surface traffic, but progress has remained slow.

In recent weeks, civic works such as footpath repairs and cobblestone replacements were undertaken in parts of the stretch, including near the Baiyappanahalli police station. While the improvements may enhance pedestrian infrastructure, many residents question the priority of these works when the larger congestion issue remains unresolved.

Transport experts note that without grade separators or signal free corridors, arterial roads like Old Madras Road are bound to face capacity constraints. They argue that coordinated infrastructure planning is essential to prevent recurring congestion and to support long term urban mobility.

Local commuters have expressed frustration over inconsistent timelines and the absence of clear communication regarding the flyover proposal. Business owners along the corridor say prolonged congestion affects customer access and logistics, adding to operational challenges.

Urban planners point out that timely execution of major mobility projects is critical for a rapidly growing metropolis like Bengaluru. As traffic density continues to rise, stakeholders believe that expediting the flyover plan could offer meaningful relief to thousands of daily road users.

For now, motorists navigating Old Madras Road must brace for extended travel times while awaiting clarity on the project’s future.
