NMDC Steel Limited (NSL), India’s youngest and most advanced steel plant, set a new benchmark on April 26 by breaking multiple production records across its key units in a single day its third such feat this April.
At the heart of the achievement is NSL’s blend of cutting-edge technology and a highly skilled workforce. The plant recorded its highest-ever basemix production of 23,307 tonnes at the Raw Material Handling System, while also achieving a record-low wagon tippling time of just 2 hours and 35 minutes.
The Coke Oven unit hit 186 daily pushings, and the Blast Furnace produced 11,034 tonnes of hot metal—both all-time highs. Meanwhile, the Steel Melting Shop tapped 52 heats and generated 9,342 tonnes of liquid steel in a single day, showcasing operational precision and speed.
Energy efficiency was another key milestone. NSL’s Top Recovery Turbine at the Power and Blowing Station crossed the 15 MW mark for the first time, enhancing the plant’s self-reliance on power. “These performances reflect NSL’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence,” said Amitava Mukherjee, CMD of NMDC and NMDC Steel Limited. This milestone moment demonstrates India’s target to reach 300 million tonnes capacity in steel.”
Additional records were posted by the site’s Sinter Plant (12,886 tonnes), Thin Slab Caster (8,850 tonnes), and Hot Strip Mill (8,673 tonnes) as it showcased impeccable interdepartmental coordination.
Apart from production, NSL had helped the nation by providing liquid nitrogen to the Chhattisgarh state government for the first time. Secondly, its newly revamped turbine is supposed to lower electricity costs by up to ₹13 crore per month.
Executive Director M.N.V.S Prabhakar attributed this to the staff’s hard work: “These achievements are a testament to our world-class infrastructure and the tireless hard work of our team.”
With steady innovations, NSL is becoming an emerging powerhouse of India’s quest for steel self-reliance—marrying pace, scale, and sustainability to define the industry’s future.
