North Chennai Development Scheme Gets Major Push with New Infrastructure Projects

Tamil Nadu has taken another step toward strengthening civic infrastructure in North Chennai with the launch of multiple projects under the North Chennai Development Scheme. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated and laid foundation stones for initiatives spanning power supply, water infrastructure, street lighting and education, signalling a focused push to improve liveability in the region.

A key highlight of the launch was the inauguration of the Broadway 33/11 kV substation, constructed at a cost of about Rs 18.24 crore by TANGEDCO. The new facility is expected to resolve long-standing low-voltage issues and ensure stable electricity supply to more than 15,000 consumers across Broadway, Mannadi and Sowcarpet. Officials said the project would significantly enhance reliability for both residential and commercial users in these dense neighbourhoods.

Strengthening water infrastructure formed another important component of the programme. The Deputy Chief Minister inspected the construction of 15 lakh litre capacity water storage tanks being developed by Metrowater at an estimated cost of Rs 27 crore. These tanks are expected to improve water distribution efficiency and address supply gaps during peak demand periods, particularly in summer months.

Urban safety and aesthetics were also addressed through the unveiling of 128 new streetlights along Prakasam Road, installed at a cost of approximately Rs 1.26 crore. The upgraded lighting is expected to enhance road safety, improve visibility and contribute to a better streetscape in one of North Chennai’s key arterial corridors.

In the education sector, Udhayanidhi Stalin laid the foundation stone for a Chief Minister’s Study Centre and a modern public library, with a combined project cost of around Rs 23.06 crore. The proposed facilities aim to support students, competitive exam aspirants and local residents by providing access to learning resources in a structured environment.

The projects form part of the state government’s broader strategy to ensure balanced urban growth, with specific attention to long-neglected neighbourhoods. Officials said sustained investments under the North Chennai Development Scheme would help bridge infrastructure gaps, improve quality of life and unlock the area’s long-term social and economic potential.
