Prolonged delays in the execution of key infrastructure projects by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) along the Tiruchi–Chennai Bypass have raised growing concerns among motorists, road safety activists, and daily commuters. The projects, aimed at easing congestion and improving road safety at some of the city’s most accident-prone junctions, remain stalled due to repeated tender failures and design revisions.
Among the pending works are the proposed vehicular underpasses at Sanjeevi Nagar and Y Road Junction, two of the busiest intersections on the Chennai–Tiruchi–Madurai National Highway. These stretches have long been identified as high-risk zones, where heavy traffic movement frequently causes bottlenecks and increases the risk of accidents. To address these issues, NHAI had tasked its road safety consultants to prepare detailed plans to eliminate blackspots and improve vehicle flow.
In addition, a ₹45-crore six-lane overbridge at Maruthi Nagar near the No.1 Tollgate Junction—considered the entry point to Tiruchi city—was sanctioned to separate through-traffic from local vehicles. The project was expected to significantly reduce travel time and decongest the Tollgate Junction. However, tenders floated three times for this overbridge project received poor response from contractors. The site’s limited working space, logistical challenges in moving heavy materials, and the need for elaborate traffic diversions have been cited as key reasons for the lack of interest among bidders.
Following these setbacks, NHAI decided to revise both the design and cost estimate to attract more participation. Sources within the authority confirmed that a fresh tender would be floated soon once the updated plans receive approval from the headquarters. Meanwhile, the proposals for underpasses at Sanjeevi Nagar and Y Road Junction are still awaiting clearance, though officials indicate that they are under active consideration.
With increasing traffic pressure on the Tiruchi–Chennai Bypass, road users and local associations have urged the NHAI to expedite the process and implement long-pending safety measures. Stakeholders emphasize that early execution of these projects will not only enhance commuter safety but also support smoother connectivity across one of Tamil Nadu’s most vital highway corridors.
