NHAI Begins Construction of New Steel Bowstring Bridge at Katpadi to Ease Traffic on NH-75

The National Highways Authority of India has officially commenced work on a new steel bowstring Road Over Bridge near Katpadi railway station in Vellore, a critical junction on the Mangaluru–Viluppuram Highway. The project, designed to ease chronic congestion on this busy stretch, is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹44.64 crore under the Annual Plan for 2022–23.

The new structure is being built adjacent to the existing concrete bridge, which is more than three decades old. With traffic volumes increasing significantly over the years, the current bridge has become inadequate to handle the daily load, resulting in long delays, particularly during peak hours. More than 20,000 vehicles use the existing connection every day, while Katpadi railway station itself handles an average of 260 train movements and nearly 25,000 passengers.

To address these challenges, the new bowstring bridge is being constructed as a modern steel structure, ensuring durability, cost-effectiveness and quicker completion. NHAI officials confirmed that the bridge will span 90.88 metres in length and 12.5 metres in width, supported by 16 pillars. The two-lane design aims to improve vehicle flow, particularly benefitting ambulances, school buses and commercial traffic that frequently slow down near the station.

The project also includes several commuter-friendly features. LED streetlights, tiled pedestrian pathways, strong hand railings and dedicated staircases from the bridge to the railway station will enhance safety and connectivity. Approach roads on both ends will cover 376 metres, with a retaining wall extending 178 metres to ensure stability and smooth vehicle movement.

Southern Railway will assist with construction on the track portion to avoid disruption to train operations. This collaborative approach is expected to speed up progress and maintain uninterrupted rail traffic on one of Tamil Nadu’s key railway junctions.

Officials stated that the new bridge is targeted for completion by September 2026. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce congestion at Katpadi, improve travel times and provide a smoother commuting experience for thousands of daily road users. The project marks an important upgrade for the region’s infrastructure and is poised to support Vellore’s growing urban and transport needs.
