In a much-awaited move, the Tender for ₹15.05 Crores of the Madurai City Corporation to upgrade the MGR Bus Stand, popularly known as the Mattuthavani Bus Stand. Renovation works will commence in August and will begin once the tender is final.

The busy terminus, catering to hundreds of intercity and intracity buses every day, on its eight platforms, has previously seen a string of complaints being raised by commuters with the deteriorating conditions. From broken tiles, dysfunctional toilets, and clogged drains to poor lighting, the terminal has been dotted with problems for many years and caters to lakhs of users every day.

“The place seems utterly abandoned with the huge crowd, dysfunctional toilets, and dilapidated infrastructure,” K Kalirasan, a resident, told us. “This is one of the major public transport hubs in southern Tamil Nadu, and it deserves better maintenance.”

According to high-ranking civic officials, the improvements would include the replacement of all aviation platform tiles, the new toilet facilities, and the rehabilitation of the stormwater drain system. The project is being undertaken under the Urban Local Body (ULB) Contribution Fund.

According to officials, the maintenance and improvement works would promote a safer, cleaner, and even more commuter-friendly atmosphere. The present condition of the bus station poses hygiene and safety hazards for heavy commuters, especially during the monsoon, with water stagnation and overflowing drains being a routine affair.

One of the largest bus stands, this acts as a link for transport in the state and to neighboring states. Even in recent years, basic facilities have yet to improve for that huge daily footfall.

The tender process is already underway, and the authorities are hopeful to get started with construction next month, and major upgrades would take place in a phased manner.
