The construction of a new garbage transfer station at Kavundampalayam is moving towards completion, with 70% of the work already finished. Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru recently inspected the site and directed officials to complete the project on schedule.

Built at a cost of ₹9.96 crore in Ward 33, the facility is designed to handle 200 tonnes of waste per day. According to a senior Corporation official, the sill level has been completed, and roof work is set to begin. Work began three months ago and is expected to be completed within the next month.

The station will receive waste from more than 70 garbage trucks daily. The collected waste will be compacted, loaded onto lorries, and transported to the Vellalore dump yard. Orders have already been placed for compactors, four lorries, and five containers to support the operation.

The Kavundampalayam facility is part of the Coimbatore Corporation’s plan to build three new transfer stations — at Kavundampalayam, Peelamedu, and Kovaipudur — to improve waste management efficiency. However, only the Kavundampalayam project has made headway. Construction at the other two locations has been stalled due to legal hurdles and local opposition. In response, officials have identified an alternative site at Saravanampatti in Ward 4 for another proposed station.

Currently, the Corporation operates three transfer stations, each with a capacity of around 200 tonnes, located at Ukkadam, Peelamedu, and Sathyamangalam Road. The addition of the Kavundampalayam unit is expected to ease the burden on the existing facilities and streamline waste collection in the city’s northern zones.

The project comes at a time when Coimbatore is grappling with mounting waste management challenges. Corporation officials believe the new station will significantly cut travel time for garbage trucks, reduce pressure on existing infrastructure, and improve efficiency in the transfer of municipal waste.

With Minister Nehru stressing timely execution, officials are confident of commissioning the Kavundampalayam station within weeks, making it the fourth major transfer hub in the city’s solid waste management network.
