JSW Steel has posted its highest-ever consolidated crude steel production in a single quarter, clocking 7.63 million tonnes (MT) in Q4 of FY25. The figure marks a significant 9% jump over the previous quarter and a 12% rise compared to the same period last year.
The surge was driven largely by strong performance in its Indian operations, which alone contributed 7.40 MT also a record. This segment saw a 9% quarter-on-quarter and 13% year-on-year growth. The total includes 0.21 MT from trial runs, up from 0.12 MT in Q3. Excluding trial runs, capacity utilisation in India stood robust at 93%.
A major contributor to the quarter’s strong performance was the ongoing ramp-up of JSW Vijayanagar Metallics (JVML), the company’s wholly owned subsidiary. Located in Karnataka, the five million tonne per annum (MTPA) integrated steel project is steadily advancing. After successfully commissioning its 4.5 MTPA blast furnace, raw material handling system, and sinter plant in Q2, JVML further activated one of the two converters and casters at its Steel Melt Shop in Q3.
The Vijayanagar expansion is on track to significantly boost JSW’s capacity. On completion, the JVML facility will enhance the plant’s overall capacity to 17.5 MTPA. It will also take JSW Steel’s total Indian crude steel capacity to 34.2 MTPA. With the commissioning of fresh assets and a pick-up in production efficiencies, JSW Steel is well-placed to ride a ramp-up in domestic demand. The steady ramp-up at Vijayanagar is a testimony to the company’s strong focus on scaling up capacity and maintaining operational performance at a high level. Industry analysts believe this is a clear indication of refinery-high JSW’s fortification of its leadership of the Indian steel segment with infrastructure and construction demand being strong.
