Mivaan Steel, a fully owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Limited, has successfully bid for the Rajgamar Dipside coal block in Chhattisgarh in the 12th round of coal block auctions conducted by the Ministry of Coal. The results were released on 21 August 2023 after the conduct of the auction on 30 July 2025.
The Rajgamar Dipside block is one of the strategically important coal reserves in the area, being targeted to feed raw material requirements for steel industries. This win could set up Mivaan Steel to build its captive coal sourcing capacity, which is crucial for companies exposed to fluctuations in global commodity prices and increasing input costs to steel makers.
After auctioning, Mivaan Steel will follow the procedural requirements as laid out in the tender document-scope, including obtaining a Letter of Intent from the Ministry of Coals, apart from acquiring all statutory clearances, and executing under the Coal Mine Development and Production Agreement. These are some prerequisites before the commencement of the mining operation, thus strengthening the backward integration of JSW Steel.
As pointed out by experts, captive coal blocks such as Rajgamar Dipside become significant for steel producers by aiding in mitigating input raw material costs and ensuring long-term security of supply. Such an acquisition would benefit JSW Steel, which is aggressively expanding its capacity in India, in mitigating its dependence on imported coal and subsequently enhancing its operational efficiency.
The Ministry of Coal has organized several rounds of commercial auctions of coal blocks since the turnaround of the sector for the private players. The ministry expects an increase in domestic coal production and a reduction in imports. The recently concluded 12th round saw steel and power companies participating, which reflects that captive coal resources are still in high demand.
Among India’s largest steel makers, JSW Steel is continuously expanding its raw material basket towards fulfilling the long-term vision of growth. With Mivaan Steel bagging the Rajgamar Dipside block, the company has further taken another step toward self-sufficiency in critical resources while supporting the government’s efforts to enhance domestic coal utilization.
