Jindal Steel Limited has marked a major milestone in the global steel industry by deploying syngas derived from domestically sourced coal across multiple stages of its steelmaking operations. With this move, the company has positioned itself as the first steelmaker in the world to implement coal gasification based technology at such a large scale.

The development is significant not only for the Indian steel sector but also for the global metals industry, as it signals a strong shift towards alternative fuel technologies and lower carbon production processes. The company said it has already established India’s first coal gasification based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, where syngas is being used for iron making.

Taking the innovation further, Jindal Steel has extended the use of syngas to galvanising and colour coating line furnaces, a first of its kind in the global steel sector. The company has also started injecting syngas into its blast furnace operations, helping reduce dependence on imported coking coal while lowering carbon emissions per tonne of steel produced.

This initiative comes at a time when industries are facing volatility in the availability and pricing of natural gas, LPG, and propane. By leveraging domestically available coal resources, the company is also aligning its operations with the Government of India’s National Coal Gasification Mission.

According to company officials, syngas from domestic coal can also serve as a substitute for imported methanol, ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and LNG. The move is expected to improve cost efficiency, strengthen energy security, and support export competitiveness, especially with upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism compliance requirements in international markets.

Jindal Steel, formerly Jindal Steel & Power Limited, has an investment base of over 12 billion dollars and operates major facilities in Angul, Raigarh, and Patratu. The latest development is expected to further strengthen its leadership in sustainable steel manufacturing and industrial innovation.
