India has taken giant strides in its road infrastructure by building 101,900 km of NH since April 2014. This is 130% higher than the annual highway construction that took place in the previous decade, 2004-2014. This is a reflection of the commitment of the country to improve connectivity and transportation efficiency.

NH aims at further growth by launching more than 1,366 ongoing projects throughout the nation. Of this total stretch of around 32,366 km, this would cut through many states from Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan to North East. It has set the completion of all work as scheduled. Work would reach completion in FY 2028, the Centre says.

India’s highway construction is strictly following the government-set standards and the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards. Contractors and concessionaires are to follow strict quality and safety standards, and there are regular audits and inspections conducted by consultants and government agencies to oversee the entire process. To further ensure compliance, some projects also undergo third-party quality audits.

The expansion of NH has a main focus on road safety, incorporated at every step, from design to operation and maintenance. There are routine safety audits to ensure compliance with the prescribed measures enhancing traffic safety for commuters. Precautionary measures both in the construction and operation phase are taken to minimize the risk factors and render the roads to be generally safe.

The above-mentioned salient development in the highway of India indicates a serious commitment to infrastructure development to promote economic growth and nationwide connectivity. With the development of several thousand kilometers in the pipeline, the country has been able to provide an effective and secure system of transportation for the future.
