Jindal Stainless has achieved a significant milestone by supplying stainless steel for the manufacture of 100 ‘Made in India’ freight wagons, which are now being exported to Mozambique. These wagons, constructed from IRSM 44 grade stainless steel, were specially developed by Jindal Stainless for Indian Railways freight stock. The shipment, departing from Gujarat’s Deendayal Port, has arrived at Mozambique’s Port of Nacala with the support of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The ministry has hailed this development as a major advancement in India’s export capabilities, reflecting the country’s growing expertise in manufacturing and logistics.
The custom-made tippler-style wagons, with each capable of carrying a payload of 63 metric tonnes, were conceptualized and designed by Jindal Rail Infrastructure (JRIL), a leading freight car manufacturer in India. JRIL has a distinguished track record of supplying high-quality railway wagons to Indian Railways, the private sector, and international markets. The company has been at the forefront of developing new wagon designs that meet contemporary logistical needs. Each of these wagons incorporates around 4.3 tonnes of specially developed stainless steel, used to fabricate the floor, side, and end walls. The choice of stainless steel over traditional carbon steel provides enhanced durability and longevity, thanks to its superior corrosion resistance and inert properties. This results in lower life cycle costs and reduced life cycle carbon emissions, making these wagons a sustainable choice for transporting goods such as coal and iron ore.
Of the total 100 wagons, 24 have already reached Mozambique, 26 are currently at the port, and the remaining 50 are en route. This delivery marks a significant step forward in India’s export capabilities and its ambitions to become a global manufacturing hub.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed pride in contributing to the ‘Made in India’ initiative. He highlighted the importance of these indigenously manufactured stainless steel freight wagons in enhancing transportation efficiency and demonstrating India’s potential in advanced manufacturing. According to him, this accomplishment positions India as a key player in the global supply chain and sets the stage for future achievements.
Jindal Stainless has a history of supplying stainless steel for prestigious government railway projects. The company has contributed to several notable projects, including India’s first Vande Metro train, the country’s first underwater metro line in Kolkata, and the first train set of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). This recent export to Mozambique underscores Jindal Stainless’s commitment to innovation and quality in the railway sector.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has played a crucial role in facilitating this export, underscoring the government’s support for initiatives that enhance India’s export capabilities. The ministry’s endorsement of this project highlights its significance in showcasing India’s prowess in manufacturing and logistics on the global stage.
As India continues to push its boundaries in manufacturing and exports, the success of projects like this serves as a testament to the country’s growing capabilities. The use of advanced materials like stainless steel in freight wagons not only improves performance but also aligns with global sustainability standards. This achievement by Jindal Stainless is a clear indicator of India’s potential to lead in high-quality manufacturing and sustainable practices in the transportation sector.
