IIT Madras has taken a significant step in academia–industry collaboration by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global manufacturing giant Caterpillar Inc. This agreement aims to strengthen joint research initiatives, promote innovation, and provide students with practical learning opportunities, building on a partnership that has existed since 2006.
The collaboration will focus on cutting-edge fields such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, autonomous mining equipment, energy systems, and electrification technologies, including batteries and fuel cells. By combining IIT Madras’ academic expertise with Caterpillar’s industrial experience, the partnership aims to address complex engineering challenges and develop industry-ready solutions.
The MoU signing ceremony took place on August 8, 2025, at the IIT Madras campus in Chennai. Key representatives included Bhuvan Anandakrishnan, Vice President of Engineering and India Managing Director of Caterpillar, and Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. Faculty members, researchers, and students also participated, reflecting the inclusive nature of the collaboration. Senior executives from Caterpillar’s U.S. operations joined the event virtually, highlighting the global dimension of the partnership.
Beyond research, the collaboration will support continuous education, consultancy projects, and talent development programs. Students will gain access to internships, full-time career opportunities, and funding for innovation clubs, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and experience needed for the evolving industrial landscape.
IIT Madras and Caterpillar’s partnership has a long-standing history of research, educational programs, and student engagement initiatives. The new agreement aligns with Caterpillar’s global university collaboration model and sets the stage for long-term growth in innovation and industry-relevant research.
This MoU marks a pivotal moment for academia–industry collaboration in India, demonstrating how strategic partnerships can foster technological advancement, practical learning, and career development. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, IIT Madras and Caterpillar are creating a model for future collaborations in the engineering and technology sector.
