Tamil Nadu is preparing for a significant leap in aviation infrastructure with the identification of Shoolagiri, near Hosur, as the site for a new greenfield airport. Spread across 2,000 acres, this project is expected to transform the industrial landscape of western Tamil Nadu. The announcement comes alongside the Parandur airport near Chennai, setting the stage for two major airport developments that will strengthen air connectivity and accelerate economic growth.

According to industry representatives, the Hosur airport will play a crucial role in powering the region’s rapidly expanding industrial belt, which spans sectors such as electronics, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing. Located close to the Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL) airstrip and easily accessible from Berigai and Bagalur, the site offers strong connectivity advantages. While a clause currently restricts new airports within 150 km of Bengaluru until 2033, officials clarified that the Hosur project will take nearly a decade to materialize, making the restriction irrelevant.

Meanwhile, the Parandur airport is expected to ease the growing congestion at Chennai’s Meenambakkam airport and boost key industrial hubs in Sriperumbudur and Arakkonam. Experts believe it will be pivotal in strengthening Tamil Nadu’s electronics and automotive clusters, while also helping Chennai reclaim its status as the southern gateway to India.

State Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa called both projects “vital drivers of industrial growth.” He emphasized that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s vision is to ensure modern airports, stronger connectivity, and a balanced distribution of growth across the state. Rajaa also highlighted that every project will be implemented with fair compensation and inclusive policies in line with the Dravidian model.

Together, the Hosur and Parandur airports are expected to attract global investments, create new jobs, expand MSME opportunities, and enhance Tamil Nadu’s reputation as South Asia’s leading industrial and logistics hub.
