Tamil Nadu Finalises Site for Hosur Airport, To Seek Centre’s Nod in Two Weeks

The Tamil Nadu government identifies a site for the future airport in Hosur of Krishnagiri district and announces its approach toward the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) for site clearance for the next two weeks.

The location identified is situated 15.5km east of Hosur city along Shoolagiri taluk between Berigai and Bagalur. It is 15.5km from the Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL) airstrip. The officials stated that the site had been chosen after several rounds of examination, including a feasibility study conducted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

At first, the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) selected five sites.This was narrowed down to two, with the final pick considered the most feasible. An obstacle survey revealed that the chosen site has around 75 obstructions, compared to nearly 350 at the alternative site located 1.5 km south of TAAL. The latter also faces high-tension power lines and hilly terrain, which would significantly increase construction costs.

“While it is technically possible to build an airport near TAAL, the cost implications and terrain challenges made the other location more viable,” an official familiar with the process said.

The state will now write to MoCA for clearance, while the Krishnagiri District Collector prepares a detailed land acquisition proposal, expected in about six weeks. Nearly 2,300 acres are required for the project, of which around 650 acres are government-owned.

Tamil Nadu has also written to the Ministry of Defence for the creation of a separate air control zone. Once MoCA approval is received, discussions with the Defence Ministry are expected to follow, with clearances likely within months.

Hosur, a fast-growing industrial hub attracting steady investments, is expected to gain significantly from improved air connectivity. The push for the project also comes as Bengaluru moves ahead with plans for a second international airport.

“We know there are challenges with the Hosur airport project, but solutions are being worked out to make it a reality,” a source said.
