The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has shortlisted five potential sites for the proposed Hosur airport, including the existing Hosur airstrip of Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL). A draft pre-feasibility report has been submitted, with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) expected to discuss the findings with AAI soon.

The evaluated locations are: 2 km south of TAAL’s airstrip, 10 km south near Thogarai Agraharam, 27 km southeast near Ulagam (close to Shoolagiri), and 16 km northeast near Dhasapalli. The draft report outlines the pros and cons of each site, with TAAL’s current airstrip and the second site nearby emerging as the most feasible options. However, challenges persist, including waterbodies and high-tension power lines at some sites.

State approval from the Ministry of Defence is another hurdle, as the airspace is controlled by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Discussions between the Centre and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) add complexity, as an agreement prevents new airports within 150 km of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport for the next decade.

Despite these challenges, the Tamil Nadu government is optimistic. With increasing industrial investments and plans to transform Hosur into a major industrial hub, the state envisions a sprawling 2,000-acre airport. The estimated eight-year timeline for clearances and construction aligns with the expiration of the Bengaluru airport agreement.

Tamil Nadu aims to expedite the Hosur project, capitalizing on its proximity to Bengaluru while addressing the state’s growing industrial and logistical demands. The proposed airport could significantly enhance connectivity and economic development in the region.
