South Korea’s HD Hyundai, one of the world’s most prominent players in global shipbuilding, has signalled a strong commitment to India by choosing Tamil Nadu as the location for its next major shipyard. The company has expressed its intent to build a large scale shipbuilding facility in Thoothukudi, a coastal district that is rapidly emerging as a strategic maritime hub for India. This development is expected to play a transformative role in both India’s shipbuilding capabilities and Tamil Nadu’s growing reputation as an investment destination.
The announcement followed the signing of an MoU at the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave held in Madurai. The agreement was formalised between senior leaders of HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering and the state’s investment promotion agency in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. While an official investment figure has not been released, industry sources estimate the project to be valued at more than two billion dollars, indicating one of the most significant global shipbuilding commitments to India in recent years.
HD Hyundai leadership highlighted the company’s vision to expand its international footprint and make Tamil Nadu a central part of its long term strategy. Executives noted that the state offers ideal conditions for shipbuilding including favourable climate, strong port connectivity, skilled manpower and a supportive industrial ecosystem. The company also pointed out that Thoothukudi’s location offers a natural advantage for large vessel construction.
The new shipyard is expected to generate substantial employment with direct and indirect job creation multiplying across multiple sectors. Shipbuilding is known to support a wide network of ancillary industries and Tamil Nadu authorities said the project will strengthen regional manufacturing and technology development. The state government also confirmed that a dedicated Tamil Nadu Maritime Manufacturing Policy will be released soon to support large scale marine industry investments.
With this development, Tamil Nadu continues to position itself as a leading maritime manufacturing destination in India. The entry of a global giant like HD Hyundai signals strong confidence in the state’s industrial growth potential and sets the stage for Thoothukudi to emerge as a key player in Asia’s shipbuilding landscape.
