The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated a major road upgrade program in the city, with a tender for the upgradation of more than 1,500 roads floated last week. The project, which is estimated at Rs 173.69 crore, will be aimed at strengthening road networks, laying bitumen treatment, and upgrading low pavements in all 15 zones of Chennai.
The April 28 closed tender asks for class one eligible contractors’ bids to perform the extensive roadworks. On April 29, bids were opened, and the shortlisting of the winning bidder is being done, according to the corporation sources.
The project encompasses 1,569 roads belonging to the Bus Route Department whose conditions will be enhanced by relaying them with bitumen and strengthening lower pavements. The improvement is expected to increase the durability and lifespan of the roads by enhancing the foundation layers.
The GCC has ranked road upgradation as part of a continuing process to deal with public grievances over poor quality roads, particularly during the monsoon season. Locals complain regularly that most of the roads maintained by the corporation are poor in quality, and are unsafe for commuters.
Besides this Rs 173.69 crore project, the GCC has also resolved to repair and re-lay interior roads of the city and has sanctioned another Rs 300 crore for the purpose from various government sources.
This project demonstrates the city’s determination towards better infrastructure and providing safer and more dependable roads for its citizens.
