The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced strict enforcement measures against vehicles that violate construction pollution control rules across the city. In a decisive move to curb rising air pollution and protect public health, the civic body has rolled out the Clean and Safe Construction Guidelines 2025, making compliance mandatory for all construction and demolition related transport activities.

According to officials, vehicles transporting construction materials and construction and demolition waste must adhere to clearly defined safety and environmental norms. Any lapse that results in the spread of particulate matter into the atmosphere will attract immediate penal action.

As per the new guidelines, vehicles must be fully covered with tarpaulin on the top and all four sides to prevent material from dispersing during transit. Overloading beyond permissible limits has been strictly prohibited. Authorities have also made it clear that materials must not spill onto public roads at any point during transportation.

In a strong deterrent measure, the Corporation will impose a spot fine of Rs 25000 on vehicles found violating the rules. Such vehicles will be seized on the spot and released only after full payment of the penalty. Civic officials stated that enforcement teams have been instructed to carry out regular inspections across key construction corridors in Chennai.

The move comes amid growing concerns over urban air quality and its impact on residents, particularly children and the elderly. With large scale infrastructure and real estate projects underway, the city has witnessed increased movement of heavy vehicles carrying construction materials.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has urged builders, contractors and vehicle owners to strictly comply with the norms. Officials emphasised that collective responsibility is essential to ensure cleaner roads, reduced pollution levels and safer construction practices in the city.
