India’s steel industry is beginning to feel the pressure of an intensifying gas supply crisis, with JSW Group reporting operational disruptions across some of its facilities. According to internal communication reviewed by Reuters, one of the company’s units is now facing a potential shutdown in the coming days, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The ongoing crisis has been largely attributed to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted key liquefied natural gas supply routes. As a result, fuel availability has tightened significantly, affecting not only JSW Steel but also the broader metals and manufacturing ecosystem in India.
The company has indicated that interruptions in fuel supply and maritime logistics are starting to impact its operational stability. One of its key subsidiaries, JSW Steel Coated Products, may struggle to meet its production and supply commitments, particularly under the government’s production-linked incentive scheme. In response, the company has reportedly sought a six-month extension to meet its obligations.
Further compounding the issue, Petronet LNG Ltd, one of JSW’s major suppliers, has issued a force majeure notice due to disruptions in LNG shipments. This has added another layer of uncertainty to an already strained supply chain.
Industry-wide concerns are also mounting. The Indian Steel Association has warned that shortages of propane and liquefied petroleum gas are affecting the entire value chain. The impact is expected to be especially severe for micro, small and medium enterprises, which form a critical backbone of the steel sector and employ a large workforce.
In response to the crisis, the Indian government has implemented emergency measures, prioritizing gas allocation for essential sectors. Industry bodies are now urging authorities to fast-track alternative imports and ensure adequate supply to steel clusters.
As the situation evolves, the gas shortage poses a serious challenge to India’s steel production momentum, with potential ripple effects on infrastructure and construction activities across the country.
