Coimbatore Western Bypass Phase-1 Set for Completion by Mid-November

The much-awaited Western Bypass project in Coimbatore is nearing a key milestone, as the State Highways Department plans to complete the first phase by mid-November. The ₹250-crore project aims to significantly decongest traffic in the city’s western corridor, improving connectivity between Madukkarai and Madhampatti.

Launched in 2023 by Highways and Public Works Minister E.V. Velu and Housing Minister S. Muthusamy, the four-lane road project covers a stretch of 11.8 kilometres. Once completed, this segment will feature 13 minor bridges, two major flyovers at Madukkarai and Madhampatti, three modern bus terminals, and upgraded junctions to ensure smoother traffic movement.

According to officials, the land acquisition for the first phase has been fully completed, covering a total of 137 acres — including 118 acres of private property and government land. The department has assured that construction works are progressing on schedule, with completion expected by November 15.

The Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority is now exploring the possibility of taking over the development of the remaining phases of the bypass. Land acquisition for the subsequent three phases has already begun. The project’s transition from the Highways Department to the Authority is being closely monitored to ensure that the momentum of ongoing work is not disrupted.

K. Kathirmathiyon, Secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, emphasised that such administrative changes should not delay the project’s progress. He noted that the Western Bypass, first proposed in 2006, has been a long-pending demand for the industrial city and requires dedicated attention to complete without further setbacks.

Civic experts also cautioned that transferring the project midway could slow down work if the new authority lacks appointed officials in Coimbatore. They urged the government to either retain the ongoing work with the Highways Department or expedite appointments under the State Highways Authority to maintain project continuity.

Once completed, the Coimbatore Western Bypass is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and enhance connectivity to major industrial areas and national highways, giving a major boost to infrastructure and real estate development in the region.
