Coimbatore’s pump set manufacturing sector, one of Tamil Nadu’s most important industrial clusters, is currently facing a major challenge as rising input costs continue to impact production and pricing.

Manufacturers in the city say the prices of key raw materials such as copper and steel have increased by 15 to 25 per cent in recent months. This sharp rise has significantly raised the cost of production, forcing companies to revise the selling prices of pump sets and related equipment.

Industry players note that the pressure is not limited to raw materials alone. Electricity tariffs for manufacturing units have reportedly increased threefold, further adding to the financial burden on small and medium-scale enterprises in the region. With energy costs forming a major part of the manufacturing process, this has directly affected profit margins and operational efficiency.

The impact is clearly visible in production numbers. Daily pump set output in Coimbatore, which once stood at nearly 30,000 units, has now dropped to around 10,000 units. This steep decline reflects both cost pressures and reduced operational capacity among manufacturers.

Coimbatore has long been known as a key hub for pump set production, catering to domestic agricultural, industrial and residential demand across India. The sector supports thousands of workers and numerous ancillary units involved in casting, machining, electrical components and distribution.

Industry stakeholders have expressed concern that sustained price increases in metals and power could further affect the competitiveness of local manufacturers. Many units are now focusing on cost optimisation, production efficiency and price revisions to manage the ongoing pressure.

The development is expected to have a wider impact on the agricultural equipment market as higher pump set prices may affect farmers and other end users. Manufacturers are hopeful that raw material prices stabilise in the coming months to support recovery in production volumes.
