CM Stalin Launches Coimbatore Master Plan 2041, Aims for Sustainable, Future-Ready Urban Growth

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin officially launched the much-anticipated Coimbatore Master Plan 2041, setting the stage for a new era of planned, inclusive, and sustainable urban development in one of the state’s fastest-growing districts. The plan, prepared by the Department of Town and Country Planning, was developed in close consultation with industry stakeholders including CREDAI Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore, often referred to as the “Manchester of South India,” is rapidly evolving beyond its industrial roots. With an estimated population of 6 million by 2041, the city is facing growing demands on its infrastructure, mobility, housing, and services. The master plan is designed as a holistic response to these urbanisation challenges while laying the foundation for long-term economic and social growth.

One of the most ambitious proposals in the plan is a 147-kilometre metro rail network, aimed at improving regional connectivity and reducing traffic congestion. The plan also includes strengthening of industrial and IT zones, upgrading education hubs, and improving environmental resilience. A total investment of around ₹56,000 crore over 16 years has been outlined for successful implementation.

The master plan spans a massive 1,532 square kilometres and is based on advanced GIS mapping and multidisciplinary data inputs. It promotes a balanced land-use approach that carefully integrates residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and environmental zones, ensuring that development doesn’t come at the cost of sustainability.

Welcoming the launch, W.S. Habib, President of CREDAI Tamil Nadu, said, “This is not just a plan on paper—it’s a bold, future-ready vision. With a focus on sustainability, smart mobility, and economic upliftment, it sets a strong example for how urban planning should be done. We thank the Hon’ble Chief Minister for his leadership.”

He further urged the rollout of similar master plans in other cities across Tamil Nadu to ensure equitable and coordinated development statewide.

CREDAI Tamil Nadu also reiterated its commitment to supporting the government in implementing the master plan, assuring collaboration with all stakeholders to turn this long-term vision into an on-the-ground reality. If implemented effectively, Coimbatore could emerge as a model for urban transformation, balancing growth with livability.
