The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art integrated terminal building at Coimbatore International Airport, which will be four times larger than the existing facility. According to Airport Director G. Sambath Kumar, the upcoming terminal will span 75,000 square meters, compared to the current 18,000 square meters, transforming the airport into a major aviation hub in Tamil Nadu.
Designed to handle the city’s growing passenger traffic, the new terminal will accommodate 4,200 passengers during peak hours. The project includes 14 aircraft bays, a parallel taxi track, and a link taxiway to improve airside efficiency. Officials confirmed that the design, drawings, and cost estimation of the terminal are in the final stages, ensuring modern facilities that meet international standards.
On the land acquisition front, the Tamil Nadu government has already handed over 605 acres out of the 627 acres requested by AAI for the airport’s expansion. A joint survey by AAI and state authorities is currently underway to validate the land records. Construction of a 16-kilometer compound wall around the allotted land is expected to be completed by September 26, after which the final design of the terminal will be completed within five months.
The expansion plan not only focuses on passenger convenience but also emphasizes infrastructure upgrades. The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed a sewage treatment plant to manage wastewater flowing into the airport compound, highlighting the sustainable approach being taken in the project.
Once completed, the integrated terminal will significantly boost the airport’s capacity, improve passenger experience, and enhance connectivity for Coimbatore. With growing industrial and IT activity in the region, the expansion will play a crucial role in positioning Coimbatore as a stronger aviation and business hub in South India.
The Coimbatore airport expansion marks a vital step in strengthening Tamil Nadu’s aviation infrastructure, offering a modern gateway for both domestic and international travelers.
