In a major development to counter the increasing traffic jam at Saravanampatti, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will now handle the construction of the Saravanampatti flyover on Sathy Road. This follows lengthy negotiations between CMRL and the State Highways Department since the road is part of the proposed metro corridor.

Initially, the National Highways (NH) wing had decided to construct a four-lane flyover with a cost of ₹80.48 crore. The 1.4 km road stretch between Amman Kovil and Saravanampatti was proposed to be 7.5 meter wide and to have 31 piers. However, CMRL proposed a more advanced two-tier design to integrate the flyover with the upcoming metro rail. The plan envisions vehicular traffic on the lower deck and the metro line on the upper deck.

A senior NH official explained that, given the need for the flyover to accommodate the elevated metro structure, CMRL was given the responsibility for the project. The integration of the two projects is expected to streamline construction and ensure structural and safety standards are met.

While the metro project will cause delays, the NH wing has decided to move forward with clearing encroachments and widening the road near the junction. This interim measure aims to ease traffic flow in Saravanampatti, a rapidly developing IT and residential hub. As part of this, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has initiated land surveys from Textool Bridge to Surya Hospital. Once the surveys are complete, the NH department will proceed with widening Sathy Road from Textool to Saravanampatti.

A top officer of the NH department assured that they are keeping in touch regularly with CMRL officials and would release funds needed once the final design is given the go-ahead. This joint venture is slated to ease traffic congestion and provide better connectivity on one of the busiest corridors in Coimbatore.
