Chennai Metro Rail Limited has taken a significant step to improve traffic movement along the city’s busy Old Mahabalipuram Road corridor by awarding a Rs 113.8 crore contract to construct grade separators at Perungudi Junction and SRP Tools Junction. The project aims to address persistent congestion at two critical intersections that serve thousands of commuters travelling daily through Chennai’s IT corridor.
The contract for the design and construction of the grade separators has been awarded to M Rajkumar. The scope of work includes building the grade separators along with service roads, drainage facilities, electrical works, and other supporting infrastructure required for smooth traffic operations. According to officials, the project is scheduled for completion within eighteen months from the date of commencement.

The initiative comes at a time when elevated metro rail construction is already under way along the OMR stretch. In order to ensure coordinated development and effective traffic management, the State Highways Department has entrusted the implementation of the grade separators to Chennai Metro Rail Limited. This integrated approach is expected to streamline both road and metro infrastructure development in the area.
At Perungudi Junction, the proposed grade separator will create a dedicated ramp from MGR Main Road, allowing vehicles to make a right turn towards Sholinganallur without disrupting traffic flow. This design will reduce waiting time at signals and help vehicles move more efficiently along the corridor.
Similarly, the grade separator planned at SRP Tools Junction will enable vehicles travelling on Old Mahabalipuram Road to take a free right turn towards the Velachery Taramani Link Road. This improvement is expected to significantly ease traffic bottlenecks at the intersection, which currently experiences heavy congestion during peak hours.
Once completed, the project will enhance connectivity between key neighbourhoods including Velachery, Taramani, Perungudi, and surrounding IT hubs. The improved traffic circulation will benefit office commuters, residents, and commercial transport using the corridor every day.
Urban planners believe that such infrastructure upgrades are essential for Chennai’s rapidly expanding technology and business districts. By improving traffic flow and reducing delays, the new grade separators are expected to support smoother mobility across one of the city’s most important economic corridors. The contract agreement was signed in the august presence of Thiru. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Managing Director, CMRL, and Thiru. S. Krishnamoorthy, Director (Finance), CMRL, between Thiru. T. Archunan, Director (Projects), and Thiru. M. Rajkumar, Proprietor, M/s M. Rajkumar. Senior officials of CMRL, including CGM’s Thiru. T. Livingstone Eliazer, (PP&D), and Dr. D. Jebaselwin Gladson (CP&M), were also present during the event.
