Chinese researchers have unveiled a revolutionary ironmaking process that is faster, more cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable. Dubbed “flash ironmaking,” the new method promises to transform the global steel industry by completing the ironmaking process in just 3 to 6 seconds an astonishing leap compared to the traditional 5 to 6 hours.
The breakthrough method, developed over a decade by a team led by Professor Zhang Wenhai of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, involves injecting finely ground iron ore powder into a high-temperature furnace using a specially designed vortex lance. This process triggers an “explosive chemical reaction” that produces high-purity liquid iron droplets, which can be used directly for steelmaking.
Flash ironmaking boasts a 3,600-fold productivity boost and works exceptionally well with China’s abundant low-grade iron ore reserves, reducing reliance on costly imports from countries like Australia and Brazil. Also, the process removes coal, which has been a central component in classical ironmaking. This process reduces carbon dioxide to near-zero levels and saves nearly one-third more energy.
The world’s largest steel-producing country, China, has an advantage of this innovation: it produces more steel than the rest of the world combined. The technology is very much in tune with the aggressive carbon reduction goals envisioned for the country while cementing its dominance in industries such as high-speed rail, shipbuilding, and automotive manufacturing.
At the heart of this breakthrough is the vortex lance, which ensures uniform distribution of iron ore particles. A single reactor equipped with three lances can produce 7.11 million tonnes of iron annually. The technology, which secured a patent in 2013, has successfully passed laboratory and pilot testing, with commercial production now underway.
Professor Zhang’s expertise in flash smelting dates back to the 1970s when he pioneered its application in copper production, earning national recognition. His team’s decade-long refinement of flash ironmaking showcases China’s commitment to innovation and environmental leadership, continuing a legacy of global steel dominance that dates back centuries.
This groundbreaking advancement not only redefines the steelmaking process but also sets a new standard for sustainable industrial practices worldwide.
