
The long awaited Chennai Port–Maduravoyal elevated corridor project is expected to be completed by November 2027, according to the National Highways Authority of India. The 21 km two tier elevated corridor is one of the most significant road infrastructure projects designed to improve connectivity between Chennai Port and the national highway network.
Officials from NHAI said construction activities are progressing steadily, with major precast operations currently underway at a large casting yard located near Chembarambakkam. The facility spans around 64 acres and is being used to manufacture single cell box girders that will be used for the elevated structure.
Regional Officer of NHAI Chennai, Virender Sambyal, stated that the Tamil Nadu government has extended strong cooperation for the project. The state government has also agreed to increase the number of daily working hours from 11 hours to 16 hours. This step is expected to significantly accelerate construction and help the agency meet the scheduled completion timeline.
Out of the total 21 km corridor length, around 15 km will be constructed along the Cooum riverbed. Work faced delays earlier due to restrictions during the monsoon seasons, when temporary bunds created in the river had to be removed. With construction activities now resuming at a faster pace, NHAI aims to complete key structural works including pile caps before the upcoming monsoon.
The corridor is designed with two levels to separate different categories of traffic. The lower deck will be dedicated to city traffic and will feature 13 ramps connecting key urban points before ending at Koyambedu. The upper deck will be reserved mainly for heavy vehicles traveling to and from Chennai Port, with entry and exit ramps located at Maduravoyal.
Once operational, the elevated corridor is expected to significantly ease congestion caused by container trucks moving through city roads. NHAI estimates that about 20,000 local vehicles and 5,500 heavy vehicles will use the corridor every day initially. Traffic volumes are projected to increase substantially by 2047 as Chennai continues to expand as a major logistics and trade hub.
The project is also expected to strengthen logistics efficiency and support the growth of industrial and real estate development along the corridor.
