Chennai’s logistics infrastructure is set for a major boost as Chennai Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) has floated tenders for a Rs 217.40 crore rail connectivity project on EPC mode. The project is aimed at creating a dedicated rail link to the upcoming logistics park at Mappedu in Tiruvallur district, further strengthening the city’s position as a leading freight and warehousing hub in South India.

According to the tender details, the proposed project involves the development of a 14.12-km rail link from Kadambattur railway station to the Mappedu logistics park. This strategic rail corridor is expected to improve cargo evacuation and ensure seamless integration between road and rail transport networks.

The Mappedu Multi Modal Logistics Park is considered one of the key infrastructure projects planned for the Chennai region, given the city’s growing role in industrial manufacturing, warehousing, e-commerce, and port-led logistics. With Chennai emerging as a major gateway for domestic and international cargo movement, the need for robust last-mile and multimodal connectivity has become increasingly critical.

Industry experts believe that the rail link will significantly reduce freight congestion on road corridors while enabling faster and more cost-efficient transportation of goods. The project is also expected to support industrial clusters located in and around Chennai, Tiruvallur, and nearby manufacturing belts.

Once completed, the rail connectivity is likely to improve cargo movement to ports, inland container depots, and industrial zones, thereby enhancing supply chain efficiency across the region. The development also aligns with the broader push for integrated logistics infrastructure and multimodal freight corridors under national infrastructure expansion plans.

For Chennai’s real estate and industrial warehousing sector, the project could act as a major catalyst, driving demand for logistics parks, warehouses, and industrial land in the surrounding micro-markets.
