Chennai Metro Crosses 1.01 Crore Ridership in September 2025, Records Highest Single-Day Commuters

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) continues to strengthen its position as the city’s most reliable and convenient urban transport system, with impressive ridership figures for September 2025. According to the latest data, a total of 1,01,46,769 passengers traveled by metro during the month, marking another milestone in CMRL’s journey to transform Chennai’s public transport landscape.

Among these numbers, September 4, 2025, stood out as a record-breaking day, when as many as 3,97,217 passengers used the metro network. This is the highest single-day ridership for the month, reflecting the increasing trust of Chennai’s residents in the metro system for their daily commute.

Monthly ridership trends in 2025 also show steady growth. From January to August, CMRL maintained strong figures with highs and lows based on city activities and passenger demand. July led the year with a remarkable 1.03 crore commuters, followed closely by August with 99.09 lakh passengers. September’s figure of 1.01 crore continues this upward trend, emphasizing the metro’s role in reducing traffic congestion and providing safe, efficient mobility to millions of people.

CMRL has also been proactive in making travel more affordable and accessible. To encourage digital adoption, the metro operator offers a 20% discount on fare products such as the digital store value pass and QR tickets purchased through the CMRL mobile app. The discount does not apply to single journey paper QR tickets purchased at counters, ensuring a push towards smart and cashless ticketing options.

Officials expressed gratitude to the public for their continued support, highlighting that the consistent ridership growth is a direct outcome of passenger confidence and satisfaction. With expanding routes, digital ticketing innovations, and customer-friendly initiatives, CMRL is working towards making metro travel the first choice for Chennai’s residents.
