Chennai Metro Rail Limited Phase II has achieved nearly 49 percent physical progress, marking a significant milestone in one of India’s largest urban transit expansion projects. The Union government has released Rs 10,354.15 crore towards the 118.9 km network, underlining continued financial support for the ambitious infrastructure programme.

The update was shared in the Rajya Sabha by the Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs. Originally approved as a state sector project by the Tamil Nadu government, the Phase II expansion received formal sanction from the Centre in October 2024. The project is being implemented through a 50:50 special purpose vehicle structure between the Union and Tamil Nadu governments, with Chennai Metro Rail Limited serving as the executing agency.

The Phase II network is designed to significantly enhance urban mobility across Chennai by connecting key residential, commercial and industrial corridors. Once completed, the expanded metro system is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time and promote sustainable public transport usage in the city.

During the parliamentary session, attention was also drawn to the financial structure of the project, including the advance contribution made by the Tamil Nadu government towards what would be the Centre’s share of the total cost. The Centre’s latest fund release is expected to support faster execution of ongoing civil, viaduct and station works across multiple corridors.

With nearly half the work completed, construction activities are progressing across elevated and underground sections. The project remains a crucial component of Chennai’s long term urban infrastructure plan, aimed at supporting population growth and economic expansion while reducing carbon emissions through improved mass transit systems.
