Chennai Metro Rail Limited has achieved a key milestone in the rollout of Phase II services, with trains operating on the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch receiving final approval from the Railway Board. The clearance paves the way for the commencement of passenger operations, which officials expect to begin in February, subject to the mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.
The approval marks a significant step forward for the 118.9 km Phase II project, which is being developed in stages to improve connectivity across Chennai and its expanding suburbs. The Poonamallee–Vadapalani corridor, spanning about 15 km, is among the most crucial sections, as it links key residential, commercial and industrial zones in the western part of the city.
Officials said the only remaining statutory requirement is the safety certification for stations along the corridor. A team from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety had recently inspected two train sets earmarked for this stretch. The inspection included a detailed assessment of passenger safety systems, emergency communication facilities, smoke detection mechanisms, traction performance and braking efficiency.
The trains, manufactured at a facility in Sri City near Chennai, were tested at speeds of up to 80 kmph during trials. While the design speed of the trains is higher, the operational speed has been capped to ensure optimal safety and passenger comfort. Emergency braking tests and collision simulation studies were also carried out to evaluate the structural integrity of the coaches under extreme conditions.
Although the Phase II trains are designed for driverless operations, Chennai Metro plans to operate them under staff supervision during the initial months. This phased approach is intended to familiarise passengers with the new technology while ensuring smooth and safe operations. Roving attendants are also expected to be deployed before a full transition to unattended train operations.
The final inspection by the safety commissioner will focus on passenger amenities at stations between Poonamallee, Porur and Vadapalani. Officials indicated that stations beyond Porur Junction towards Saligramam will be opened to the public in subsequent phases.
Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion and boost real estate and commercial activity along the route, reinforcing Chennai Metro’s role in shaping the city’s urban mobility future.
