The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) restored close to 480 km of roads across the city, and completed repairs along 2,995 other stretches dug up for utility-disruption projects. This initiative is part of a special road improvement scheme launched under the orders of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
In all, the planned works numbered 3,987 covering 648.75 km and were expected to cost ₹489.22 crore. An official release says work orders were given on May 20 and June 20 of this year, while the civic body is setting a target of September 15 for completing the entire program. Most works are already complete, as far as officials say, while others remain on schedule.
Most of the cuts were made by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to lay pipelines, sewer connections, and electrical connections. For excavation and restoration works, Metro Water approved some excavation along 859.98 km across 4,982 roads. So far, completed works in 3,266 roads, 507.79 km, by the agency and issued no-objection certificates for restoration. Nearly 2,976 stretches of the GCC have been restored, totaling 476.89 km.
Tangedco was permitted to dig 30 roads with a length of 4.72 km, but restored 19 roads of a length of 2.52 km. The Corporation added that the remaining works were on their way and would be finished in two weeks.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin is taking personal charge of the progress of this task every week, according to officials. Instructions at strict directives have been given to contractors and utility agencies by his summons that all restoration works should be finished by the end of September.
According to civic officials, this restoration is part of a larger picture concerning newly built roads not being damaged by utility works for long after. With water, sewerage, and power lines being cut into the road frequently, the administration has attached much importance to repairing the same faster and improving convenience and safety for commuters.
