The Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area is to be finalized in March 2025, following a series of public consultations planned for February. It covers around 5,904 square kilometers spread across five districts. This aims to guide the infrastructure growth for the next 25 years.

It had increased from 1,189 square kilometers in 2018. This is why a more extensive survey among 50,000 households is to be carried out to meet changing transport demands. The findings reflect the necessity of upgrading rail links on the Outer Ring Road and more frequent bus operations on Velachery and Varadharajapuram corridors.

Residents have advocated for ward-wise consultations to ensure that the plan addresses specific local requirements. This approach tailors solutions to the unique challenges and opportunities that each area presents.

It was developed by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), and it is a comprehensive master plan. It has been developed with public involvement through a survey and consultations with people in general, and it underlines the role of public participation in a transport system that can cater to the diverse needs of the residents of Chennai.

The finalized plan is envisioned to act as a strategic guide for sustainable urban mobility, emphasizing an integrated approach to land use and transport planning. This initiative complements broader endeavors to improve urban livability and economic growth within the Chennai Metropolitan Area.

With the public consultation phase looming, active participation is called for by stakeholders to ensure that the Comprehensive Mobility Plan answers the aspirations and needs of the various communities within the CMA.
