Notably, the Phase-2 expansion of Chennai International Airport is in full swing with officials working hard towards meeting the new deadline of March 2026. Now slated for July 2025, the ₹2,467 crore project has already been rescheduled multiple times, but officials are keen to see no further delays.
The expansion also aims to increase passenger capacity from 2.3 crore to 3.5 crore annually, covering 2.36 lakh square meters. The project started in 2018 and was designed to unfold in two phases. The first phase, the full cost of which is ₹1,260 crore, included the construction of a new integrated terminal spread across 1.36 lakh square metre, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023. For the last two years, however, only one wing of this terminal has been used for international passengers.
To further accommodate the growing air traffic, the second phase was initiated and involved the expansion of terminal space. The new terminal will have eight gates for entry, 60 check-in counters, 10 scanning screens and eight modern aerobridges when completed. Moreover, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) is upgrading the baggage conveyor system with a view to minimizing passenger waiting periods.
As Chennai becomes a key aviation hub, expanding capacity is critical for raising the passenger experience and international connectivity. The authorities are fast-tracking the completion of the structural work by ensuring world-class facilities for travelers.
