Chennai will get yet another cable-stayed bridge in Adyar and thus bid goodbye to the old abandoned Broken Bridge on Adyar while offering relief in terms of relieving city congestion. Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) initiated a new project designed to link two of the area’s hot spots namely: Srinivasapuram to Urur Kuppam on a sleek design with aesthetics based on that from Bandra Worli Sea link of Mumbai city.
The project is still very preliminary and the details of the required materials, cost, and dimensions have to be finalized. Nevertheless, the ball has been set rolling with the GCC inviting tenders for a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR) at an estimated cost of ₹20 lakh. The consultant selected for the job will be required to carry out traffic and geotechnical studies, suggest feasible designs, and obtain the necessary approvals while adhering to both Indian and international standards.
The proposed bridge is expected to significantly ease congestion on Greenways Road and Santhome, thereby enhancing connectivity between Besant Nagar and Foreshore Estate. This will not only benefit daily commuters but also improve access to key coastal areas.
The consultancy work of three phases over 45 days will be conducted, said GCC. When the bridge is ready, it will be both functional as well as architectural and will provide a great upgrade to the infrastructure side of the city, and simultaneously undo the traffic issues that have been present for so many years in Chennai.
