The Central government has officially confirmed a 50 percent partnership in the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II expansion project, marking a major milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainable urban transport. Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated that the project will be executed under a joint venture between the Centre and the Telangana government, with equal financial participation from both sides.
Developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, the expansion aims to improve connectivity and ease congestion across Hyderabad’s rapidly growing urban and IT corridors. Minister Khattar praised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for removing long-pending hurdles that had delayed the project’s earlier stages. He said that the cooperative approach between the Central and state governments has set a strong foundation for timely implementation and long-term operational success.
Highlighting the country’s rapid urban mobility growth, the minister noted that India’s Metro Rail systems have expanded from just five cities in 2004–05 to 24 cities today. This reflects a strong national focus on transforming urban travel while reducing pollution and travel time for millions of daily commuters. Hyderabad’s Phase-II expansion aligns with this vision, positioning the city among India’s most advanced metro-connected urban centres.
Khattar also spoke about the Musi Riverfront Development project, describing it as an equally vital initiative to reshape Hyderabad’s urban landscape. He added that funds from the Central government and international financial institutions, including the Asian Development Bank, could be channelled to expedite its completion. The project aims to rejuvenate the Musi River corridor, enhance flood management, and create vibrant recreational and commercial spaces for citizens.
Together, the Metro Phase-II expansion and the Musi Riverfront project represent Hyderabad’s strong urban revival push. With Central backing, state collaboration, and possible global financial support, these projects underscore India’s growing commitment to modern, sustainable, and inclusive city development.
