In a move to enhance Chennai’s urban landscape, the Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited (CMAML) has announced plans for an Integrated Multi-Modal Facility Complex (MMFC) on Broadway. Designed to blend commercial development, leisure, and efficient transit services, the project is expected to turn Broadway into an iconic city landmark.

CMAML, a special-purpose vehicle jointly formed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), has floated a tender for the project. The contract includes design, construction, and architectural enhancements, along with provisions for lifts, escalators, landscaping, and other infrastructure upgrades within the Kuralagam premises on Broadway.

The MMFC will be built on a Brownfield site, extending from NSC Bose Road to TNPSC Road, incorporating modern architecture and eco-friendly elements. Authorities anticipate the facility will serve as a hub for commuters, seamlessly integrating with existing public transport systems.

Demolition and Redevelopment Plans

To make way for the project, several structures will be demolished or partially demolished. This includes:

  • Broadway Bus Stand’s steel structure
  • 287 shops in the vicinity
  • Three public toilets
  • Police booth & feeder room
  • Legal Cell Office (Ground Floor) of Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC)
  • Ground & first floors of GCC’s Old Age Home and Children’s Quarters
  • Part of Kuralagam building
  • A section of the compound wall of Dental and Medical Colleges
  • One entry/exit of High Court Metro Station

The Broadway Bus Stand, Chennai’s largest MTC-operated bus terminus, will be reimagined as a seamless connection point for buses, Metro trains, suburban rail, and the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS).

With the MMFC project, Chennai is set to witness a significant urban upgrade, creating a landmark that combines history, commerce, and modern transit solutions.
