Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. announced its broad development plan for setting up a greenfield refinery and petrochemical complex in Andhra Pradesh at an estimated cost of ₹6100 crore. The board of the company has sanctioned the commencement of the precursory project activities for establishing the refinery on the eastern coast of the state.

Feasibility studies are being conducted, including project analysis, land identification and procurement, environmental assessment, and engineering design development. This set-up has been proposed at the behest of Andhra Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, himself a munificent supporter of the BJP-led NDA, as sources have maintained.

The company has emerged as the lowest bidder for a solar project of 150 MW to be set up in two years with an estimated cost of ₹756.45 crore.

It hopes that the solar project will generate about 400 million units of clean energy annually, while the annual revenue will be roughly estimated at ₹100 crore. With this decision, BPCL has undertaken a strategic shift further diversifying its energy portfolio with a focus on sustainability. This move towards renewable sources of energy puts BPCL aligned on a long-term basis to contribute to India’s green energy transition.

BPCL’s refinery and petrochemical complex, plus its foray into solar energy, should enhance BPCL’s attractiveness in the Indian energy space by balancing its traditional petroleum operations with environmentally sustainable practices.
