Bengaluru’s growing traffic congestion has once again brought the city’s infrastructure challenges into sharp focus, with the Bengaluru Traffic Police recommending a large-scale mobility upgrade plan to improve road movement and pedestrian safety.
According to a comprehensive analysis carried out by the department, the city currently requires 35 new flyovers, 25 underpasses and 101 skywalks, apart from several other civic interventions such as junction improvements, bus bay development, multi-level parking facilities and relocation of BMTC bus stops.
The proposal has been prepared based on traffic congestion data, accident-prone zones, pedestrian fatality analysis and predictive studies using historical vehicle growth trends. Officials noted that nearly 2,000 new vehicles are added to Bengaluru’s roads every day, making long-term infrastructure planning critical for the city.
A major share of the proposed flyovers has been identified in East Bengaluru, particularly in Whitefield and Mahadevapura, where traffic volumes have increased significantly due to rapid residential and commercial expansion. Key stretches such as Varthur Kodi Junction, Dommasandra Circle, Gunjur and Siddapura Junction are among the priority locations.
Similarly, several underpasses have been proposed at major traffic bottlenecks including Hebbal Junction, Iblur Junction and Sarakki Circle to ensure smoother movement along key corridors connected to the Outer Ring Road.
In a significant push for pedestrian safety, the traffic police has also recommended 101 skywalks across high-density roads and highways. This comes in the backdrop of more than 200 pedestrian deaths recorded in 2025, highlighting the urgent need for safer crossing infrastructure.
Officials said most of the interventions are planned for outer city growth corridors, where vehicle density is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. Smaller works such as junction redesign and shifting of bus stops have already begun, while major projects are expected to be taken up in phases by the newly formed civic corporations.
The proposed infrastructure roadmap is expected to play a key role in easing Bengaluru’s long-standing traffic woes and supporting future urban expansion.
