Bengaluru is set to achieve a major milestone in urban infrastructure with the city’s first double-decker flyover at the congested Silk Board Junction. Designed to address one of the city’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks, the 5.5 km stretch has been partially operational since November 2024. The final ramp, connecting HSR Layout to BTM Layout, is expected to open by December 2025, marking the flyover’s full completion.
The double-decker design allows traffic to flow on two levels, effectively managing heavy vehicular movement in this busy area. Commuters traveling from HSR Layout to BTM Layout via Ragi Gudda will now experience smoother journeys, while improved access to Electronics City, a major IT and industrial hub, is a significant advantage. The flyover is expected to reduce congestion considerably, although traffic signals at the Silk Board junction will remain to ensure pedestrian safety and regulated traffic.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which oversees the project, opted for steel girders instead of prestressed concrete to address turning radius challenges and optimize structural flexibility. This innovative approach has enabled the construction of ramps and curves that better suit the city’s complex traffic patterns.
Part of Bengaluru’s broader infrastructure development, the double-decker flyover highlights the city’s focus on modern engineering solutions to meet growing transportation demands. By separating traffic streams on two levels, the flyover is expected to cut travel time and enhance connectivity between key residential and commercial zones.
Once fully operational, this flyover will not only ease daily commutes but also support Bengaluru’s economic growth by improving accessibility to major IT corridors and industrial areas. As the city continues to expand, such projects serve as critical solutions to long-standing traffic challenges, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to urban mobility.
