Andhra Pradesh is set to take a significant step in strengthening its industrial ecosystem as ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) prepares to begin construction of its massive integrated steel plant in the state. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project will be held on March 23 at Rajayyapeta in Anakapalli district, marking the start of one of the largest steel manufacturing investments planned in the region.

The proposed facility will have a total production capacity of 17.8 million tonnes per annum and will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, the plant will have a capacity of 8.2 million tonnes per annum. The project has already received approval in November 2024 and is expected to play a major role in boosting steel production and industrial growth in the state.

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated around 2,200 acres of land for the project. The plant will also benefit from port integration, which will support the movement of raw materials and finished steel products more efficiently. The strategic location near the coast is expected to strengthen logistics connectivity and reduce transportation costs for the company.

As part of the project’s ecosystem, AM/NS India has also invited expressions of interest from qualified suppliers to establish a dedicated steel fabrication unit with a capacity of one million tonnes near the integrated steel plant. The fabrication unit is expected to be developed within four years and will support downstream steel manufacturing activities.

The integrated steel plant will produce a range of finished steel products including hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils, galvanised auto coils and other value added steel materials used across construction, automotive and infrastructure sectors.

To support raw material supply, the company is also working on connecting its operations to an iron ore slurry pipeline originating from NMDC’s Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh. A cadastral survey is currently underway to establish the right of way for the remaining stretch of the pipeline up to the project site.

Industry experts believe the project will significantly strengthen India’s steel manufacturing capacity while creating employment opportunities and accelerating economic development in Andhra Pradesh.
