Apple Inc. has taken a significant step in expanding its India presence by setting up its first dedicated corporate office in Chennai. The global technology major has leased approximately 20,000 square feet of office space at DLF Cyber City in Porur, marking its formal entry into Chennai’s corporate and IT ecosystem.
While Apple’s iPhones have been manufactured in Tamil Nadu for several years through contract manufacturers such as Foxconn in Sriperumbudur, the new facility represents the company’s first owned corporate office in the city. Industry sources indicate that the Chennai office will operate as a Global Capability Centre, supporting and overseeing key global business functions.
The move places Chennai alongside Bengaluru and Hyderabad as an important node in Apple’s India strategy. Over the past decade, the city has steadily strengthened its position as a preferred destination for technology firms, driven by a strong talent base, competitive operating costs and improving infrastructure. Apple’s decision is seen as a major endorsement of Chennai’s evolution from a manufacturing hub into a full-fledged technology and corporate services centre.
The choice of Porur and the DLF Cyber City IT park is also being closely watched by the real estate industry. The location offers Grade A office infrastructure and houses several multinational companies. Proximity to Chennai International Airport and the upcoming Porur metro corridor has further enhanced the area’s attractiveness for global firms looking for well-connected business districts.
Real estate consultants note that large global technology firms setting up Global Capability Centres often act as long-term anchors for office micro-markets. Apple’s entry is expected to strengthen demand for premium office space in western Chennai, particularly along the Porur and Mount-Poonamallee Road corridor.
For Chennai, the development adds to a growing list of global companies expanding their footprint in the city. As competition among Indian cities to attract high-value corporate functions intensifies, Apple’s Chennai office signals increasing confidence in the city’s ability to support global operations beyond manufacturing.
