In a significant boost to India’s steel and industrial sector, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) India has laid the foundation for its mega steel plant in Rajayyapeta, located in Nakkapalli mandal of Anakapalli district in Andhra Pradesh. The project, valued at ₹1.36 lakh crore, is among the largest industrial investments in the country.

The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, ArcelorMittal Executive Chairman Lakshmi Niwas Mittal and Union Steel Minister H D Kumaraswamy, along with several senior officials and industry representatives. The State government has allocated over 5,000 acres of land for the development of the plant.

Planned with a total production capacity of 17.8 million tonnes per annum, the project is expected to transform the region into a major steel manufacturing hub. The plant will be developed in phases, with the first phase targeted for completion by 2028, marking the commencement of production activities.

Beyond steel manufacturing, the project is expected to drive large-scale economic development in the region. It will generate employment opportunities, boost ancillary industries and support growth in sectors such as logistics, infrastructure, housing and services. The development of a captive port and road connectivity infrastructure will further enhance the project’s strategic importance.

The Andhra Pradesh government has positioned the project as a cornerstone of its industrial growth strategy, highlighting its commitment to fast-track approvals, land acquisition and investor-friendly policies. The swift progress in project clearances reflects the state’s focus on attracting large-scale investments.

Industry experts believe that the AMNS steel plant will play a critical role in strengthening India’s domestic steel production capacity and reducing dependence on imports. It also aligns with the broader national goal of enhancing infrastructure development and supporting the Make in India initiative.

As India continues to expand its infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, projects of this scale are expected to significantly contribute to economic growth. The AMNS plant in Andhra Pradesh stands as a landmark development that could reshape the industrial landscape of the region in the coming years.
