The Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the construction of the Amaravati-Hyderabad Greenfield Expressway with an investment of nearly ₹25,000 crore, giving a great connectivity boost for the southern part of India. The project is projected to reduce travel time between the two capital cities significantly, while also alleviating congestion on overland routes.

The expressway will be a six-lane stretch equipped access-controlled corridor aimed at decongesting the existing road networks and facilitating swift transport from Andhra Pradesh to Telangana. More importantly, the Central government has committed to bear the full cost of finance, including land acquisition—effectively getting over a major obstacle in implementing mega infrastructure on a scale like this.

On April 9, 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs, MHA, had instructed the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways – MoRTH to initiate the process of drafting a detailed project report – DPR. The directive also seeks a get ready for the much-delayed Regional Ring Road (RRR) network connecting the invocation of northern Telangana to enhance intra-state connectivity in the space and nourish economic activities in neighboring districts.

The green signal comes after a high-level inter-ministerial meeting on February 3 over this was chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan. It was attended by senior officials from 15 departments including transportation, steel, agriculture, petroleum and railways to review infrastructure projects taken up under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act.

Also, officials reviewed the progress of several pending projects in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Chief Secretaries of both states have been directed to work in close coordination and develop a detailed roadmap for the timely completion of these projects.

Once full-fledged, the Amaravati-Hyderabad Expressway is set to be a prominent infrastructure link in the state which will augment mobility, trade, and regional development.
