Andhra Pradesh Begins Construction of Landmark Amaravati High Court Complex

The Andhra Pradesh government has marked a significant milestone in the development of Amaravati with the commencement of construction of the new High Court complex. The project moved into the execution phase with the laying of the raft foundation, reinforcing the state’s commitment to completing its greenfield capital city as envisioned in the Amaravati master plan.

The foundation work was formally inaugurated by Ponguru Narayana, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, who performed special rituals before the start of construction. Senior officials present at the site described the event as a key step in reviving momentum for Amaravati, particularly its core administrative and judicial infrastructure.

The High Court complex has been designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm Norman Foster and Partners and is planned as a modern, future-ready judicial institution. Spread across approximately 21 lakh square feet, the building will house 52 court halls, catering to the present and projected needs of the state’s judiciary.

As per the design layout, courtrooms will be located on the second, fourth and sixth floors, while the Chief Justice’s court will occupy the eighth floor, offering both functional separation and architectural prominence. The construction will require nearly 45,000 tonnes of steel, highlighting the scale and structural complexity of the project.

Officials indicated that the High Court complex will be equipped with advanced digital court systems, modern infrastructure and adequate public amenities. The focus is on creating an efficient, accessible and technology-driven judicial environment that can support faster case management and improved public service delivery.

The project is targeted for completion by the end of 2027, subject to construction timelines being maintained. Once completed, it is expected to serve as a cornerstone of Amaravati’s institutional landscape.

The High Court building is among seven iconic structures currently under construction in Amaravati. Minister Narayana has reiterated that the state government is fully committed to completing the capital city in a phased and planned manner. The progress of the High Court complex is expected to act as a catalyst for broader development activity, strengthening confidence in Amaravati’s long-term vision as Andhra Pradesh’s administrative and governance hub.
