The Centre has sanctioned ₹988.75 crore for 39 road development projects across Keralam, covering a combined length of 486.33 km. The funding, approved under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme, is expected to support road upgrades across several districts, with a significant share directed towards the northern Malabar region.

The approval was announced by State Public Works Minister P K Basheer on October 31, 2026. According to the minister, construction is scheduled to begin in December, subject to the completion of the remaining technical, financial and administrative procedures.

Of the total sanctioned amount, ₹570 crore has been earmarked for 21 road projects in the Malabar region. These works will cover Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. The allocation represents a substantial portion of the overall funding, underlining the focus on improving road connectivity in northern Keralam.

The remaining allocation will support road development works in other parts of the state. However, the government has not yet released a detailed district-wise breakdown of the project costs or identified all the individual road stretches covered by the approval.

The 39 projects include improvements to major district roads, ordinary district roads and corporation roads. The state government intends to develop these roads in line with National Highway standards. The proposed upgrades are aimed at strengthening links between rural settlements, urban centres and local economic hubs.

The funding comes at a time when road infrastructure remains an important part of Keralam’s wider connectivity and development plans. Better road conditions can help improve access to markets, public services and commercial centres, while supporting the movement of people and goods across districts.

The state government has already accorded administrative sanction for the approved projects. However, technical and financial clearances must still be completed before construction can proceed. The December 2026 start date will therefore depend on how quickly these remaining formalities are concluded.

The latest approval followed discussions between Basheer and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on the state’s road development requirements.

While the sanction establishes the funding framework for the 39 projects, their eventual impact will depend on timely execution, construction quality and compliance with the prescribed standards. With nearly 486.33 km of roads included, the programme could provide a significant boost to Keralam’s district-level road network once work gets underway.
